Ernest' son Theodore Schneider today is the owner and undisputed leader of Breitling. Willy Breitling made the final sale of the Breitling name and trademarks to Ernest Schneider, a pilot and the proprietor of the Sicura watch company. Thus, after 95 years, in 1979, the Breitling legacy left the family and lay dormant until 1982.
Leadership was passed to electrical engineer, pilot, and entrepreneur (formerly of Sicura) Ernest Schneider. Mechanical watches were increasingly seen as archaic, and thus the first Breitling quartz watches were released in the early 1980s.Once the Sicura name was completely phased out only the Breitling name and models remained and by 1982 we see the first ‘new’ Breitling models coming from the former Sicura lines.
